Where two worlds become one.

Back in 2021, in the heart of a global pandemic, Maeve and Lorenzo (together with their dog), arrived on Yolngu Country. Unsure as to what awaited at the end of the long 800km dusty track, they were simply following their hearts to a part of Australia they had always wanted to visit. Unbeknownst to them, they actually chose to camp their first three nights in North East Arnhem Land on Djapirri’s Mother’s homeland, but they had yet to meet.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, Maeve and Lorenzo had the pleasure to met Djapirri. A connection that was instantly recognised as something very special in each of them. A bond had been made and one that would simply strengthen in their mutual purpose united in heart and healing.

In the Gurrutu, the Yolngu kinship system, Djapirri is Maeve and Lorenzo’s grandmother (Momu/Mari). A sacred relationship that is deeply honoured and from the very first meeting, the three of them knew they would be creating and sharing their common purpose with the world.

As the pandemic took hold, this is when Gimiyala took flight. Together, they would groom the gorgeous beaches of Djapirri’s homeland looking for shells and collecting fresh bush medicine all while sharing time and stories together. Just like the traditional times.

Djapirri as Yolngu, Lorenzo as Italian and Maeve as Irish, each have a very clear connection to the ancient culture of their birth place and all that stands for. Through the sharing of stories, they understood just how many wonderful connections there are between cultures.

Gimiyala is the place where the understanding of their cultures finally meets. From this meeting place they create products for the modern world with wisdom traditionally passed through time and where the great respect and connection with Country is at the forefront.

What started out as a simple Etsy store with a few earrings, has now evolved to see their much loved bush medicine products being sent all over the world.
